When word got out on social media, those in support of the LGBTQ+ community showed up, with a lot more people, and a lot more rainbows in their signage.
“One day I might be talking about something as important as eliminating conversion therapy in Michigan and the next hour I’m up on the roof looking at an HVAC system that’s about to give out,” he said.
Those stories are the reason she and others got together to form a group just to support the elders of the community.
“I was waiting someone else. And then finally I thought, ‘Well if no one else is going to do it I’m going to do it.’”
“But I do need to belong. It’s important, you know, having that identity and having a place where you say, ‘These are my people, and I feel safe here.”
Hennen did not address any of these comments, although the majority of his fellow council members voiced their support for those who spoke for the LGBTQ+ community and the Berkley Pride Block Party on June 26th.
But such events are becoming more popular as communities of all sizes see the value in being welcoming of LGBTQ+ neighbors. “You are changing the narrative that the only way to come out in a small town is to get out.”
Totals are not in yet for this year, but with packed streets leading into sunset, groups at the event reported much success.
“So seeing the rainbow flag, and seeing people come out to something like this, is how you know that you’re not alone.”
Jess and other LGBTQ+ members of the Berkley community, as well as straight allies, are coming together after City Councilmember Dennis Hennen cast a “no” vote to approving the Downtown Development Authority’s request to approve the Berkley Pride Picnic event on June 26.
In addition to a scene full of rainbow colored lights and trendy music, Liberty Bar has a menu with tasty options including their signature series of poutines.
Everyone is welcome to participate in Holly Pride and Pride Night to show their support and love for those around them
Designating June as pride month helps substantiate the village of Holly as a community of acceptance and diversity.
