She and others shared their stories on May 10, 2012 at the “It’s Not an Easy Choice” program put on by Oakland/MacombNOW in partnership with Planned Parenthood Affiliates of Michigan and Northland Family Planning Centers. “If you don’t pay attention, we will go back,” she said. “The mainstream media isn’t telling you about what’s happening.”
One way the women are connecting is with a discussion series called “Love Your Mind,” which gives them a chance to talk about issues like self-image, equality, social justice and reproductive rights.
On Wednesday, January 25 the group will host a discussion on articles pertaining to Roe v. Wade, the landmark court case from 1973 that protected a woman’s right to have an abortion.
The Love Your Mind discussion centered around a Huffington Post article called “Gloria to Liz Lemon: How Pop Culture is Producing Today’s Feminist Icons.” The article praised the author’s picks for contemporary feminist icons – including Tina Fey, Christina Aguilera, Katie Couric and Diane Sawyer, Gwen Stefani, Portia de Rossi and Ellen DeGeneres and Michelle Obama. NOW members and guests debated the writer’s choices.
