In just its second year, Ferndale Pride was able to raise $10,000 to give to local charities. Michigan AIDS Coalition, Affirmations, the Dyke March and the Ferndale Community Foundation each received part of the $10,000 total.
The Ferndale Pub Crawl took place on July 27, 2012 with thousands of visitors doing a walking tour of 22 Downtown Ferndale venues. The event was a fundraiser for four local tax-deductible charities: the Ferndale Police Auxiliary, FernCare, Ferndale Community Foundation, and the Michigan AIDS Coalition.
“In spite of my efforts and those of my team, few too many people in metro Detroit understand the challenges facing AIDS-service organizations such as MAC, HELP, CHAG, APM and others. As I depart, I hope the folks reading this article will consider making a donation to any of these charities so that prevention work can continue and more young people especially, can be educated.

The 11th Annual Ferndale Blues & Music Festival is in the planning stages, and organizers are seeking venues and sponsors to make this year’s event better than ever.
Max Fischer is now all grown up, and running his own film company called Fish Soup Films. He came to Michigan last Wednesday as the keynote speaker for a luncheon at Michigan AIDS Coalition to help attract attention and funding to the cause. He shared news of a documentary that he has been working on for the past year, his way of carrying his mother’s work forward.
The talk will be a donation-based lunch, with the first 60 to RSVP enjoying food from the Matt Prentice Restaurant group. The lunch will be held at the MAC headquarters at 429 Livernois in Ferndale on Dec. 15 at noon. There is no charge, but donations are suggested.
Each winner has the sign placed on their property, and will be presented with a certificate at the Sept. 26, 2011 Ferndale City Council meeting.
“Every team takes on a collaborative personality,” Ryan said. “This team of all the teams I remember has required the least training and direction. They banded together from the beginning and I admire their long term vision.”
Volunteers for the Ferndale Blues Festival were recognized at Monday night’s City Council meeting. Organizers also presented a check for $4,000 to one of the event’s benefactors, Ferndale Youth Assistance.
The Ferndale Community Foundation has announced seven grant awards for 2011. The awards go to groups and efforts that make the community better. Dan Martin, President of the Community Foundation, presented the awards along with Treasurer Helen Weber. Since 2003 the Foundation has provided over $50,000 to local causes.
The Annual Rib Burn Off was a huge success, with ribs running out before 4:00 despite the heavy snow and cold weather conditions. The event, part of the annual Ferndale Blues Festival, raises money for Ferndale Youth Assistance and Michigan AIDS Coalition.
