Troubles lurk above and below at Ferndale High School, as multiple repairs and projects have the School District exploring the possibility of asking voters to approve a 7 mil bond extension. The public vote is expected to be in February 2012. If approved it would extend the taxpayers’ obligation from 2023 through 2033, and would generate approximately $26.5 million for the District to use on multiple infrastructure projects.

Ferndale Public Schools is pleased to announce a Summer 2011 in-school food service program. Working with the USDA, United Way, and the Michigan Dept. of Education, Ferndale Public Schools will be providing every child 18 years and under, a free nutritious breakfast and lunch throughout the summer.
The Ferndale Community Foundation has announced seven grant awards for 2011. The awards go to groups and efforts that make the community better. Dan Martin, President of the Community Foundation, presented the awards along with Treasurer Helen Weber. Since 2003 the Foundation has provided over $50,000 to local causes.

On April 19 we brought you news of a young Ferndalian hoping to raise chickens in her backyard. …Now she is asking interested residents to sign an online petition asking for a change in the ordinance which would allow coops to be built near homes. As the weekend of June 11-12, 2011 approaches, Ferndale gears up for the 24 hour walk to raise money to fight cancer known as Relay for Life. Teams from all over the City will walk the track at Ferndale High School, with pledges going for The American Cancer Society. The event is known for it’s fun themes, performances and antics, which have started early this year thanks to the community-focused “Purple Glove” video.
…“This is one of our essential services,” said Affirmations Interim Executive Director Kevin Howley. “We are working on grant writing right now to keep this program funded because it serves the community in so many ways. Knowing that 43 more counselors are out there with a better understanding of LGBT client needs makes it a worthwhile way to not only help people here who need it, but the community as a whole. It’s great to think of LGBT acceptance spreading this way.”…

When Angela Counts went to the emergency room with chest pain last May, she was 35 years old with no medical insurance. Although she said she “knew” something serious wrong, getting doctors to take her seriously was just the first of many uphill battles for the young mother of three.
These wonderful people saw a problem, rolled up their sleeves and solved the problem. Where else but in Ferndale? Where else would you see such support? This is so Ferndale….I am humbled, thankful and absolutely awed.

The food revolution is on in Ferndale Schools. When Coolidge and JFK Schools got slushees in the cafeteria last week, few knew that the ever-changing sweet treat is really made from 100% fruit. Other changes have been made over the past few months which have been subtly introducing more and more healthy food into the breakfast and lunch of students in the district.
Despite her humble attitude and sincere appreciation of the others involved, Heler was overwhelmingly nominated by Ferndale 115 News readers for “Ferndalian of the Year,” for 2010 because her hard work.
