The Summer Concert Series at the Ferndale Public Library has begun, with a performance by Soul Explosion Tuesday night. The jazz group played to a packed community center room, reminding everyone that FPL is not your typical “quiet” library.

Ferndale Public Library has won the Metro Detroit Book and Author Society’s $2,000 James C. Dance Grant for the purchase of books and related items about art and the business of art.
If Miriam Gershow made a bumper sticker it would say “Fiction Saves Lives.” The Berkley High graduate is the author of The Local News, a story about a teenager whose older brother went missing and how it affected her and her family. Gershow, who now lives in Oregon, came back to Michigan to do a reading from the novel at The Ferndale Public Library as part of their Ferndale Reads celebration.

The Recycling 101 Workshop is from 6:30pm-8pm at the Ferndale Public Library (222 E. 9 Mile). Green Tuesdays are a monthly workshop series put on by the FESC to encouraging environmental education in the community. On Oct. 15 McMann spoke at the Ferndale Public Library. She read the first chapter of her latest book, The Unwanteds.
McMann, who is originally from Holland Michigan, will be signing books and reading to the youngsters. Boot Beat, an independent bookseller in Oak Park, is co-sponsoring the event and will have copies of The Unwanted available for purchase.
“The filing deadline for Library Board candidates expired at 4:00pm, today,” said Ferndale City Clerk Cherilyn Tallman in a statement released on May 10, 2011. “We will have no contests for any of the five open seats. That means we will not have an August Primary.”
