A tour of historic Ferndale homes and buildings, decked out in their holiday finest decorations, is set for Saturday, December 8th beginning at 3pm at the Ferndale Historical Museum.
The Ferndale Community Foundation Announced it 2012 Grants at the City Council meeting on June 25, 2012. Each year the foundation raises money to be distributed to projects throughout the city. $8,000 was awarded in total.
Delicacies included chicken shawarma from Anita’s, macaroni and cheese with chicken from Dino’s, fish patties from Howe’s Bayou, salted caramel ice cream from Treat Dreams, and hummus and salsa from Garden Fresh
Whether you want to support local charities, or enjoy some good food, Taste of Ferndale is a good choice according to Pawlica. “Ferndale is just as diverse in our food choices as we are in the people who live and work in the city. This event allows people to discover restaurants they may have never heard of before and be reintroduced to some favorites they may not have visited in a while.”
Program participants will receive a new, empty backpack in September with the first name, sex, age and clothing size of a Ferndale Head Start student, as well as a prescribed list of items to purchase. They will then have two weeks to return the backpack filled with such items as crayons and a coloring book, a reading book, toothbrush and toothpaste, underwear and sweat clothes (estimated cost of items is approximately $30 per backpack).
The Ferndale Community Foundation has announced seven grant awards for 2011. The awards go to groups and efforts that make the community better. Dan Martin, President of the Community Foundation, presented the awards along with Treasurer Helen Weber. Since 2003 the Foundation has provided over $50,000 to local causes.
And now, nearly two years later, I’m proud to say that The Ferndale 115 News has over 5,000 unique readers each month and a strong reputation in the community for fairness. And getting a CFF Good Neighbor Award on April 19 was a huge honor. Not just to be recognized, but also to be among so many others who embrace the same ideals and live their lives with positive energy and intent.
The Ferndale Pride 2011 Planning Committee is in full swing as over 20 volunteers gathered last week to flesh out details of the three day celebration. From June 3-5 Ferndale will be host to many LGBT community events designed to complement the Motor City Pride Celebration taking place in Hart Plaza. Shuttles will run between the two events.
This year over 200 people packed Via Nove restaurant where they listened to jazz music and sampled food from a dozen Ferndale restaurants and businesses. Garden Fresh Salsa, which is made here in Ferndale, was the main sponsor of the event. Mardi Gras was the theme.
Palmer is one of a dozen citizens who serve on the Board of the Community Foundation as they prepare for their grand annual fundraising spectacular The Taste of Ferndale. The taste-fest takes place on March 8, 2011 from 6-9pm at Via Nove Restaurant. Tickets are $30 and include samples from many local businesses, live music from The Metro Jazz Voices, and a large silent auction. The event is presented this year by Garden Fresh Gourmet
On Dec. 11, 2010 Downtown Ferndale was full of fun winter festivities for the annual Ice Festival. Businesses were decorated with holiday glitz and glam, accentuated with spectacular ice carvings in front of many local shops. Families enjoyed meeting Santa and his reindeer, ice skating in the Library parking lot, festive music, crafts and holiday sales. Jeannie Davis, longtime Ferndale resident and President of the Ferndale Seniors, is going to be on the hot seat on Friday November 19th in a local-celebrity roast to benefit The Ferndale Community Foundation and the Ferndale Seniors.
The totals are in from this year’s Pub Crawl, with $23,000 raised for charity at the signature annual Ferndale event.
On Saturday, July 17, 2010 The Ferndale Community Foundation and FernCare had a pass-the-hat kickball game, with the donations being split between the two teams. The Ferndale Seniors sold hot dogs and refreshments and livened up the sidelines at Martin Road Park with their cheering. “We’re cheering for both sides,” said the boisterous Sharron Chess. “The Community Foundation and FernCare are both great, and we just love them both. It’s all about having fun and Ferndale!”
