FERNDALE VIEW: Law Day
In 1961 Congress designated May 1 as Law Day to remind us of our commitment to the rule of law. This year, the chosen theme is, “The Legacy of John Adams, From Boston to Guantanamo.” Of course, John Adams, the first lawyer president, defended the British soldiers involved in the “Boston Massacre” in 1770 because of his belief in the rule of law, particularly when representing unpopular clients.
Cupcake Station’s Sweet Opening
On Thursday, April 21, 2011 The Cupcake Station opened at 301 W. 9 Mile. The Cupcake Station offers a large variety of specialty cupcakes made fresh each day from scratch. As part of their Grand Opening Celebration they gave away 500 free cupcakes. Thank you to Stacey Jamison and Jason Dutra for sending in pictures of Ferndalians welcoming in one of Downtown Ferndale’s newest businesses.
Ferndale Voters Approve Millage Increase
Ferndale City Clerk Cherilyn Tallman has confirmed that Proposal A has passed with 52.83% voting Yes, and 47.17% voting No.
There were a total of 1848 Yes votes and 1650 No votes.
The voter turnout was 20.69%.
Beyond Ferndale: Mitten Movie Project
Mitten Movie Project is a host of a celebration for independently made trailers, animations, shorts, and videos- the vast majority being based in the metro Detroit area. Perhaps my favorite thing to see, other than my stunning performance as goofy-real estate agent in “The Mystery Word”, was spotting a glimpse of Ferndale’s DIY festival used as the back drop for the cleverly named “Ménage-Detroit.”
Upcoming Fundraiser to Replace Kids’ Stolen Bikes
Even in the quiet community of Ferndale, sometimes children have their bikes stolen. The Loving Touch and officers who work for the Ferndale Police Department have teamed up to host the Bikes for Lil’ Tykes Pool Tournament to raise money to give new bikes to ten such youngsters.
Budget Meeting #4, Part Two: Fire Department
Ferndale City Council had its fourth budget planning session on Wednesday, April 13, 2011. They heard presentations from the District Court, the Police Department and the Fire Department. Each department presented a slideshow describing what their legally-mandated responsibilities are and presenting budgets reflecting cuts of 15% and 20%.

The Handmade Detroit Craft Revival at The Loving Touch on April 19, 2011 kicked off Green Week in Ferndale. Over two dozen vendors sold arts, crafts, jewelry and other unique items in a fun, family-friendly setting. Crafters from all over SE Michigan gathered for the event, including several Ferndale artists.

In order to spread community awareness about Earth Day, the students at Roosevelt Primary decorated paper grocery bags to give to Western Market customers. On Wednesday April 20, Western Market co-owner Steve Selvaggio went to the school to pick up the bags and talk with the youngsters about saving the planet.

Summit on Older Adult LGBT Issues Held at Affirmations
The Summit was put on by a coalition of groups and individuals, including: ACLU of Michigan, Adult Well Being Services, Affirmations, Citizens for Better Care, Equality Michigan, Jewish Gay Network, the Jim Toy Community Center, and S.P.I.C.E. Information collected at the summit will be used to guide the coalition in working to solve the problems faced by the aging LGBT population.
Ignite Detroit And The Lessons Learned There
Well to give you a little background, Ignite is a speaking forum event that began in Seattle and has slowly made it’s way around the country. It features various speakers from all walks of life and they give a speech. Some are hilarious, others are quite serious. They have 5 minutes featuring 20 PowerPoint-like slides that switch every 15 seconds so it really keeps the speaker alert. This was the second year for the Ignite event in Detroit… and I almost didn’t go.
