The intersection of 9 and Hilton was closed for several hours on April 30 when an oversize load truck bottomed out and the cab became detached as it traveled South on Hilton. The truck had not made it far from it’s starting point at Universal Press and Machinery at 955 Hilton.
The increasing cost of water, along with complications from a recent water meter reader change, have got Ferndale residents worried about their water bills. Some have reported bills increasing to over $1,000, while rumors and speculations have flooded social media sites.
Family, friends and supporters of Army Staff Sgt. Matthew Leach gathered in Berkley on April 27 to honor his service by unveiling a memorial for him and a bench named for his son Jack. The memorials are at Berkley Legion at 2079 W. 12 Mile Road.

The Day of Books and Roses brought Ferndale together in support of the Ferndale Public Library, and honored the legend of St. Jordi of Catalonia. On this day, lovers exchange books and roses and it is the number one day for book sales in Spain. The official day is April 23. Here in Ferndale it was celebrated on April 21, with food, wine, poetry readings and music added into the mix.

Ferndale Mayor Dave Coulter gave his state of the City address on Thursday night at The Local Kitchen and Bar. Hosted by the Ferndale Area Chamber, this event brought people out to hear what’s going on around town. Coulter introduced new neighborhood programs, touted The Mayor’s Business Council, and explained some of the financial impediments facing the city.
Council members agreed to dip into the General Fund in order to retain the four firefighters through the end of the year, at a cost of $186,143.

‘The present owner of the Monkeemobile parked it in front of the theater much to the delight of the fans and the confusion of the residents.
The first resolution would have the Oakland County Animal Shelter save all healthy and treatable homeless cats and dogs by the end of 2014.
The second resolution would require the shelter to post monthly statistics on the county website showing what happened to the cats and dogs that entered the shelter – adopted, returned to owner, euthanized.
The third resolution would require the shelter to first offer an animal to a rescue organization before they euthanize it.
