The Salton Sea, an ecologically troubled and culturally abandoned region in Southern California inspired Wheaton to work in color. From rust-red water, to orange and purple sunsets over murky gray-muck beaches crusted with white salt crystals, to the subtle brown and silver tones of rotting fish carcasses, her work reflects the beauty and tragedy of a place that humanity has forgotten.
On Feb. 12, 2011 the NLG hosted a Legal Observer Training class at the Wayne State University Law School in Detroit. Law students and citizens from around SE Michigan, including several from Ferndale, learned the ins and outs of this important volunteer job.
The weather was crisp but sunny as two dozen activists – known as Women in Black Detroit – gathered in front of The Ferndale Public Library to organize for a silent march through Downtown Ferndale to bring attention to war and violence supported by America in other parts of the world.
After a six month hiatus, Downtown Ferndale’s entrepreneur initiative is back on the front burner. Downtown Ferndale IGNITE re-launches Thursday, Feb. 10 at Go! Comedy Improv Theatre. Scheduled from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, the night’s presentation will focus on planning for your business, whether it is already open or still a dream.
Last November the Ferndale Film Festival attracted thousands of visitors to Downtown Ferndale to view 36 independent films at multiple venues along Woodward Ave. and 9 Mile Road. In addition to attracting customers into the restaurants, bars, and stores, The Ferndale Film Festival raised $3,000 for neighborhood charities.
Christina Sheppard-Decius presented “Downtown Ferndale by the Numbers” to let council and residents know about the projects and developments over the past year.
Leadership in the City of Ferndale has taken an interesting twist. Craig Covey (former Mayor, now County Commissioner) has seemingly switched spots with Dave Coulter (former County Commissioner, just appointed Mayor). The switch-a-roo, which came about after a series of steps that could not have been planned if they tried, is only one of many coincidences in the lives of these two community leaders.
When Dennis Warrilow began working at the Ferndale Fire Department nearly 25 years ago, some of the equipment for rescuing people and putting out fires was not as advanced as it is today. But yet, many of the tools of the firefighter’s trade are basics that have saved lives for over a hundred years. At the FPD they use a combination of old school gear, new technology, manpower and a whole lot of water to keep homes and people safe.
Ferndale is a town well-known for its numerous community groups and nonprofits. But for those who are struggling to make ends meet in this tough economy, it can be hard to know where to turn for help. Here are some of the resources available in the city for those in need. But for the team of City employees and poll workers behind the scenes, Election Day means two and a half months of meticulous planning and work, all building up to a dawn-to long after dusk in day full of dealing with people, machines, bureaucracy and immense pressure to do everything right.
Ferndale Mayor Craig Covey continued his annual tradition of joining The Ferndale Seniors for a Town Hall Meeting and luncheon on Oct. 27, 2010.
Blogging for business was the topic of an enrichment class earlier this month at the Ferndale Career Center. Job seekers, entrepreneurs and those considering the places they already work got together to talk about how posting online content can help them with their goals.

…“Monitor Landscapes” opened Oct. 1, 2010 at Lemberg Gallery, and was also featured as part of the Art Detroit Now’s North Woodward Gallery Crawl the following day.
