Beyond Ferndale: An 8 and Woodward Biking Blog

If there are two streets in Detroit an outsider can name, they’re likely to be Woodward Ave and Eight Mile Road. Woodward from the olden days (think baby boomers and Dream cruisers), and Eight Mile from that rapper fella… We could hardly wait to get there. Even if it was daylight. (check out guest writer Arthur Miller’s amusing observations as he looks for spelling errors and unique features of these well known city streets)

Rev. Veska puts the Ferndale in First United

The church also reaches out through social media and maintains both a Facebook page and a website.

Veska also tries to raise the church’s community profile with special events such as an upcoming Blessing of the Bikes on July 17. Members and the public can bring motorcycles, bicycles, skate boards or “anything with wheels” to an outdoor service, weather permitting.

A Blessing of the Animals is also planned for August 14 as an outdoor service.

Pre-School Backpack Program Seeks Caring Donors

Program participants will receive a new, empty backpack in September with the first name, sex, age and clothing size of a Ferndale Head Start student, as well as a prescribed list of items to purchase. They will then have two weeks to return the backpack filled with such items as crayons and a coloring book, a reading book, toothbrush and toothpaste, underwear and sweat clothes (estimated cost of items is approximately $30 per backpack).
