Each December, The Ferndale Beautification Commission takes nominations and selects the winners of the Holiday Light Awards. One winner from each quadrant of the city is selected, plus one business. Earlier this week Beautification Commission Chairperson Peggy Snow delivered letters to the homeowners and invited them to the first City Council meeting in January, where they will be presented with their certificates.

A rear-ending chain reaction happened on W. 9 Mile near Liverniois at about noon on Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012. It appeared that none of the occupants were severely hurt. Christine Ordell Stokes captured the image of the three-car pileup just after police and fire arrived on the scene.

The caller said that this suspicious activity occurred repeatedly
over past months. He believed drug activity was taking place. Ferndale police responded to the complaint and an officer
spotted the suspect vehicle driving away from the area.
She walked north on Livernois for several blocks, then was attacked by the same man she had seen earlier. He grabbed her from behind and began to drag her. The victim had keys in her hand and used them to defend herself by hitting the attacker with the keys.

As holiday parties and gift-giving approaches, SOCRRA has released a flyer to remind people about some of the common holiday items which can be recycled. The organization collects recycling from several South Oakland communities which benefit from the sale of the recycled materials.

The money raised goes to the Ferndale Goodfellows, a longstanding organization that helps needy families in Ferndale at Christmastime.
