New Fire Truck Arrives Safely

On Monday, April 11, 2011, Ferndale City Council approved the purchase of a new aerial fire truck. On Wednesday the engine arrived safely and firefighters were able to begin testing it out.

Dyke March Steps up for a Second Year (June 4)

Between 250-300 people came to the inaugural march, which moved down W. 9 Mile through Downtown Ferndale, and finally ended with a rally in Geary Park. This year’s march will take place June 4, 2011 at 2pm, following last year’s course.

Chamber Hosts Headlee Forum

The Ferndale Area Chamber of Commerce held a forum for business owners and residents to discuss Proposal A. Representatives from local and County government were there, as well as a representative from each of the citizens campaigns. Dennis Whittie spoke on behalf of Yes to Ferndale’s Future. Sean House represented FACT (Ferndale Against Council’s Tax).

Eggstravaganza 2011

Despite the rainy weather families turned out to Martin Road Park on April 9, 2011 for the Ferndale Recreation’s Annual Eggstravaganza. Youngsters were divided into age-appropriate groups and let loose on a park full of candy-filled plastic eggs.

Library Offers Free Storytimes for Kids of All Ages

Jillean McCommons, the Ferndale Public Library’s new Children’s Librarian, has begun offering storytime programs for kids from birth to age five, and a special storytime for families with kids of all ages.

The programs are free and require no registration. For older children there are crafts as well as stories. The following schedule will run through the end of May.

Transition Ferndale Seeks Those Who Want a Sustainable Future

Members of the newly organized group Transition Ferndale met Thursday to discuss how the group will be structured and what direction it will take in the effort to keep Ferndale moving forward in the face of depleting global resources.

The Stuff of Nightmares: Mercury Fur @ The Ringwald

Mercury Fur, Philip Ridley’s fifth play, premiered in 2005 at London’s Menier Chocolate Factory and the play was deemed so shocking that audience members walked out each night. The controversy continued as Ridley’s publishers for decades, Faber and Faber, refused to publish the text. It set critics at odds with one another with some calling it “Degraded” while others called it “A play you need to see.”

Budget Meeting #3 – April 6, 2011

On April 6, 2011 The Ferndale City Council held its third official budget planning session. Council meets every Wednesday starting at 6pm to discuss how to keep spending in line with revenue. One factor is that an election on May 3 will determine if residents are willing to accept a temporary property tax increase to support City services.

Hundred Dollar Bill Found & Donated

An unidentified woman found a $100 bill in the Ferndale Public Library parking lot at 11am today. Not seeing any obvious owners, the woman decided to donate the money to Capuchin Soup Kitchen in Detroit.
