The expanded service will launch in September 2023 and is intended to improve public transportation services in South Lyon, Wixom, Milford Township, Commerce Township, Lyon Township, the Village of Milford and the Village of Wolverine Lake.
The change begins September 5, with increased service areas and more eligible riders.

Judging from past votes and the fact that over half of the county’s jurisdictions had voted to opt-out in the past, I was predicting a rather close loss for the measure.

The Oakland Transit Millage Proposal aims to bring those groups together to create a more comprehensive system. If passed voters in the Nov. 8 election, the cost of improving the system would be shared by all communities without an opt-out option. It would mean bus service for cities like Novi and Rochester Hills who currently opt-out of the SMART system. It would also provide funding to the smaller transit organizations – North Oakland Transportation Authority (NOTA), Western Oakland Transportation Authority (WOTA), and Older Persons Commission which serves the Rochester area.
The Oakland County Board of Commissioners voted Wednesday to place a countywide transit millage on the Nov. 8, 2022 ballot.

SMART Flex will offer microtransit trips from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week. Rides start at $2, with a maximum price of $8, depending on distance.
Myself and other Rochester Riders members are working to not only build awareness for public transportation and the vital role it plays, but also to encourage residents of Rochester and Rochester Hills to speak up in favor of bringing bus service to town.
For residents in Oakland County, the fondness for public transit depends largely on where people live.
