Oakland County Restaurant Quest: J-Bird Smoked Meats in Keego Harbor
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Sept. 27, 2026)
Keego Harbor, MI – The quest to try every restaurant in Oakland County recently brought me to J-Bird Smoked Meats in Keego Harbor, where smoked meats, comfort food, and a fun rustic atmosphere make for plenty of choices.
For my visit I wanted to explore all they had to offer, so the Three Meat Sampler was a great place to start. I went with brisket, ribs, and fried chicken, along with a square of cornbread.
The brisket had a beautiful dark smoked edge, while the ribs came generously coated in barbecue sauce. And the fried chicken added something crispy to the collection. J-Bird smokes its meats using Michigan apple, cherry, maple and oak woods, adding an extra layer of flavor to the proteins on the menu.
There are also several different barbecue sauces to try, adding even more variety. Choices include Memphis, Midwestern, Kansas City, Harbor Heat, Old Yeller Mustard and more.
Of course barbecue is only part of the comfort-food equation, so I also tried the Smoke Pit Chili and the J-Bird Mac and Cheese. The chili is made with smoked chuck roast, brisket and ground beef simmered with peppers, tomatoes, onions and seasonings for a robust Texas-style side. And who can go wrong with the creamy goodness of mac and cheese?
For something completely different, I also got the Mason-Dixon Chicken salad. This colorful meal starts with mixed greens and is piled with bourbon-smoked chicken, pit-roasted beets, chickpeas, tomatoes, cucumber, olives, bell peppers, pickled peppers, queso fresco, and house dressing. It’s a pretty substantial salad with lots of different flavors and textures mixed in.
I also tried one of their signature desserts – The bourbon bread pudding. This has the softness, warmth, and creaminess of traditional bread pudding, but with a smokey bourbon kick.
There are plenty of other choices on J-Bird’s menu for future visits. Barbecue lovers can pick from pulled pork, beef brisket, ribs and other smoked meats, while the comfort-food side of the menu includes Buttermilk Fried Chicken and Nashville Hot Chicken. There are also sandwiches such as the Pig Pie Classic with pulled pork and slaw, and the Bo Dip Francaise with sliced brisket, caramelized onions, Swiss cheese, and au jus.
The restaurant itself is worth looking around while you’re there. The rustic space is filled with fun details, including a large metal bird sculpture and a colorful American flag display in the window. Outside, a giant outline of a rooster decorates the building near the racks of firewood used for all that smoking.
J-Bird Smoked Meats is located at 1978 Cass Lake Road in Keego Harbor. The restaurant offers dine-in, carryout, curbside and delivery options. Check them out online at https://jbirdsmokedmeats.com/.
