Detroit Zoo’s GreenPrize Competition Aims to Help Schools Reduce Cafeteria Waste
(Detroit Zoo, Sept.26, 2026)
Royal Oak, MI – Southeast Michigan schools can apply for a program designed to help students reduce cafeteria waste while learning about sustainability.
GreenPrize, presented by M3 Investment Services and operated by the Detroit Zoological Society, will provide 18 schools with free Waste-Free Lunch Assessments. Each package is valued at $1,500 and includes tools, resources and guidance to help schools identify and implement ways to reduce cafeteria waste.
The program is open to public and private schools serving students in grades 4-12. Schools in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties will receive priority, although schools in surrounding counties are also encouraged to apply and all applications will be considered.
According to the Detroit Zoological Society, GreenPrize is intended to give students hands-on experience with sustainability while helping schools work toward Michigan Green School recognition.
Schools do not need to already have an established environmental program to participate. Existing Green Teams and Eco Clubs can apply, as can schools that are beginning sustainability efforts.
Participating schools should have administrative support and a staff member willing to organize students and work with a waste diversion expert to carry out the program. Applicants should also be planning to apply for Michigan Green School recognition during the upcoming school year.
The Detroit Zoological Society said the program is designed to help students understand recycling, waste reduction and zero-waste practices while giving them opportunities to put those lessons into practice at school. The goal is for students to develop habits and skills they can also use at home and in their communities.
Schools interested in learning more can participate in an optional virtual question-and-answer session Thursday, Oct. 8 at 3:30 p.m.
Applications are due Friday, Oct. 30 at 10:30 a.m. Award recipients are scheduled to be announced Monday, Nov. 2.
