(OCSO, May 30, 2026)
Rochester Hills, MI – The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a serious crash that occurred early Friday morning on westbound M-59 involving a civilian vehicle and a parked patrol vehicle.
At approximately 2:27 a.m., deputies were investigating an unrelated incident on westbound M-59 between Crooks Road and Adams Road when an unoccupied Oakland County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle was struck.
Sheriff Michael J. Bouchard emphasized the importance of motorists remaining alert and complying with Michigan’s Move Over Law. “I cannot overstate the safety and legal need to follow the law and move over one lane away from any stopped emergency vehicle,” Bouchard said. “These crashes are too common and often deadly. Please, pay attention, slow down, and move over.”
A 2018 Chevrolet Impala, driven by a 27-year-old Waterford Township man, was traveling westbound on M-59 when, for reasons still under investigation, it struck the fully marked patrol vehicle while it was positioned to block traffic.
The driver of the Impala was transported by the Rochester Hills Fire Department to McLaren Oakland Hospital, where he remains listed in critical condition. Deputies were several yards away from the patrol vehicle at the time of the crash and were not injured. The patrol vehicle had its emergency lights activated at the time of the collision At this time, investigators have not determined whether alcohol, drugs or excessive speed were factors in the crash.
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit is conducting the investigation.
