Ferndale, MI – Thousands of protestors gathered at No Kings rallies across Oakland County Saturday, as part of a day of protests nationwide expressing concerns over President Donald Trump’s administration.
The NoKings.org website explains the sentiment behind the protests, saying “Masked secret police terrorizing our communities. An illegal, catastrophic war putting us in danger and driving up our costs. Attacks on our freedom of speech, our civil rights, our freedom to vote. Costs pushing families to the brink. Trump wants to rule over us as a tyrant. But this is America, and power belongs to the people – not to wannabe kings or their billionaire cronies.”
This was the third massive rallying day with the No Kings theme, with the group’s most publicized effort taking place in Minnesota where Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) had been squaring off with protestors earlier this year, and the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti at the hands of ICE agents fueling community outrage. In Minneapolis Governor Tim Walz and Senator Berine Sanders were among the speakers, and Bruce Springsteen came to perform with the crowd being estimated at over 200,000 people.
In Michigan rallies happened in big cities, suburbs and rural towns. In Ferndale an estimated 7,000 people packed the intersection of 9 Mile and Woodward to have their voices heard.
Among the signs were those calling out President Trump’s connection to human trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, those who are unhappy with war in Iran, frustration over the declining economy, anger over ICE activities, fear of losing voting rights, solidarity with TSA workers, and other such points of concern.
Ferndale City Councilmembers Rolanda Kelley and Eddie Sabatini were among the thousands who protested in Downtown Ferndale.
“I showed up today to stand with my neighbors and our city in solidarity for our rights and well-being. I’m proud to live in Ferndale and proud that our community shows up creative, passionate, and peaceful. It’s an honor to serve this community every day, but days like today are especially inspiring,” Sabatini said.
Kelley shared her reasons, telling Oakland County Times “I participated in the rally because this moment demands it and our voices matter. Right now, the current administration is not representing so many of us and is not reflecting the values we hold in our community.
“As an elected official, seeing so many people show up in Ferndale gave me hope – hope for our future, hope for the midterms, and hope for change. You could feel a real sense of unity, and at the same time, a shared frustration—people are fed up. It reminded me that we’re not alone and that we have a responsibility to turn this energy into action. Showing up matters, and today demonstrated that.”
In South Lyon about 400 people attended. “It was inspiring to see friends and neighbors speak their conscience about our current state of affairs,” said Thad Bogert.
Rallies took place in many communities, including Lake Orion, Pontiac, Farmington, West Bloomfield, and Troy. Nationwide there were over 300,000 rallies.
