(Waterford Police, March 3, 2026)
Waterford Township, MI – On Thursday February 26th, Detectives from the Waterford Police Special Operations Unit arrested 24- year-old Spencer Anderson of Clarkston, who was charged in a 3-count warrant as follows:
Count 1 – Malicious Destruction of Police PropertyFelony 4 years and/or $5,000.00
Count 2 – Malicious Destruction of Police PropertyFelony 4 years and/or $5,000.00
Count 3 – Malicious Destruction of Police PropertyFelony 4 years and/or $5,000.00
On Monday February 23rd Waterford Police became aware that several Automatic License Plate Readers (ALPR) within the Township, were no longer active. Physical inspection of those ALPR revealed they had been forcibly broken from their mounts and smashed to pieces.
Ironically, Detectives discovered one of the ALPR had captured an image of the vehicle and license plate driven by the suspect at the time the cameras were damaged.
Additionally, video footage obtained from nearby businesses showed a lone individual exit that vehicle and use a blunt instrument to hit two separate ALPR cameras until they broke off their mounts, into pieces.
ALPR collect only images of vehicles and license plates. Those images, coupled with a number of other investigative techniques, led to a successful resolution in this case, that being the arrest of a person accused of three felonies.
Waterford Police have also used ALPR technology to assist in solving many other crimes, including; larceny, organized retail fraud, auto theft, home invasion, unarmed robbery, human trafficking, and homicide.
Spencer Anderson and others are entitled to their opinions regarding technological advancements in policing. However, no one is entitled to maliciously destroy property of another, including that of the Waterford Police Department.
In addition to the above listed felony charges, and the potential consequences related to those charges, we intend to seek full restitution for all of the damage done in this case. Spencer Anderson was arraigned in the 51st District Court by the Honorable Todd Fox and released on a $500 cash bond.
He is scheduled to appear for a probable cause conference on March 11, 2026 at 8:30am.
