Hazel Park Man Suspected in Assault with Hatchet

Hazel Park, MI – A 51-year old Hazel Park man is in custody after police say he attacked a visitor with a hatchet. According to the police report “On 1/29/2026 at approximately 2:20 in the morning, Hazel Park Police was notified by a local hospital that a person came into the emergency room with serious injuries to the hand and mouth.
Officers spoke with the victim at the hospital. The victim stated that earlier he and two friends went to a home on E. 9 Mile in Hazel Park to pick up a friend. While at the location the victim was confronted by the suspect (another resident) over an issue some time ago with the suspect’s family member. During the conversation, the suspect grabbed a hatchet off the dining room wall and swung it at the victim’s head. The victim raised his hand to protect his head and sustained a severe cut to his hand. The victim and his friend fled from the house to a vehicle as the suspect pursued him. The suspect then struck the victim in the face with the hammer end of the hatchet. The victim was then driven to the hospital for treatment.
Officers later served a search warrant at the home and arrested the suspect. The weapon and blood evidence was recovered at the scene.
The information was presented to the Oakland County Prosecutor who authorized a warrant for Assault with intent to do great bodily harm (10 year felony).
