Gun Shots in Auburn Hills Prompt Warning to OU Students, No Injuries Reported

Auburn Hills, MI – Oakland University students and staff got a troubling alert on Wednesday saying that shots had been fired in an area off campus.
According to a bulletin sent by OU:
“The Oakland University Police Department (OUPD) was notified by the Auburn Hills Police Department (AHPD) that multiple shots were fired into a parked, unoccupied vehicle near the intersection of Walton Boulevard and Squirrel Road.
“A dark-colored SUV was observed fleeing the area in an unknown direction. At this time, no additional suspect information is available. No injuries were reported.
“OUPD is monitoring the situation and coordinating with local law enforcement. There is no known ongoing threat to the campus community at this time; however, this alert is being issued out of an abundance of caution. The OUPD is not recommending a lockdown of the campus at this time.”
They also included the following safety tips:

- Report any suspicious activity to OUPD immediately.

Auburn Hills Police Chief Scott McGraw confirmed that an incident had occurred, sharing that “On January 7, 2026, at approximately 12:40 pm, officers from the Auburn Hills Police Department responded to a report of shots fired in the area of Barrington Square and Squirrel Road.
“Upon arrival, officers confirmed that a firearm had been discharged in a parking lot. The incident appears to have been targeted and isolated in nature.
“There were no injuries, and no ongoing threat to the public at this time.
“Detectives are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, no additional details are being released at this time.”
