Case of Legionnaire’s Disease, Presence of Bacteria, Prompts Temporary Closure of Sheriff’s Administration Building

Pontiac, MI – The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office has temporarily closed Building 38E, the Sheriff’s Administration Building, effective Friday, Dec. 5, and throughout the weekend after preliminary water tests detected the presence of Legionella bacteria.
Testing was initiated after a custodial employee assigned to the building was diagnosed with Legionnaires’ Disease.
Several water samples collected from the facility returned positive results.
In coordination with the Oakland County Health Division and county leadership, mitigation measures have begun, and the building will remain closed until it is deemed safe to reopen. All personnel assigned to Building 38E will work remotely on Friday and are expected to remain available through county communication channels.
Employees or recent building visitors who are experiencing flu-like or pneumonia-like symptoms are urged to seek medical care and inform their provider of a possible exposure.
