Seven Vehicle Crash on M-59 Leaves One Man Dead, Another Injured

Pontiac, MI – A 34-year-old Pontiac man was fatally injured in a seven-vehicle crash early today.
The crash happened just before 6 a.m. on eastbound M-59 near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Pontiac. The Pontiac man, who was not identified pending notification of next of kin, was driving a 2011 Chevrolet Aveo eastbound on M-59.
At the same time, a 20-year-old Waterford man was operating a 2015 Chevrolet Impala. Both vehicles hit an icy patch, ran off the left side of the road and hit the cable barrier.
As the Chevrolet Impala continued riding along the cable barrier, it was struck in the rear by a 2004 Dodge Dakota that also hit the icy patch. The Chevrolet Aveo bounced off the cable barrier and slid on its side back into the middle lane of the road. It was struck on the roof by a 2018 Ford F150 driven by an 18-year-old Oxford man, fatally injuring the Aveo driver.
As the Chevrolet Impala was coming to a rest, it was struck by the Dodge Dakota. Three other vehicles also crashed trying to avoid the vehicles involved in the initial crash.
The driver of the Chevrolet Aveo was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Impala was taken to the hospital where he was treated for minor injuries. None of the other drivers were injured. All the drivers were wearing seat belts.
Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash. Driving too fast for the icy road conditions was a factor in this crash, which remains under investigation by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit.
