Pick It Up Hazel Park: City Adding Trash Bins and Dog Waste Bags, Seeking Public Input

Hazel Park, MI – The City of Hazel Park is proud to announce “Pick It Up Hazel Park” a new community-driven initiative spearheaded by Councilmember Alissa Sullivan in collaboration with the Hazel Park Department of Public Works (DPW). This program aims to enhance environmental awareness, beautify public spaces, and improve walkability by installing dog waste bag stations and additional trash receptacles throughout the city.
The project will begin with the installation of 20 dog bag stations in strategic locations, followed by 5 additional stations per year over the next five years. The Hazel Park Arts Council (HPAC) has already committed to sponsoring the first station, which will be artist-designed and installed at the Hazel Park Art Park along South John R. A call for artists to design this inaugural station will be announced soon.
Addressing Community Concerns
“Pick It Up Hazel Park” tackles three persistent issues voiced by residents:
*Litter in public spaces
*Lack of accessible trash receptacles
*Pet waste left in parks and neighborhoods, which poses health and environmental risks
Dog waste can carry harmful bacteria, parasites, and diseases, threatening pets, wildlife, and humans. It also contributes to water contamination through runoff into sewer systems. By providing convenient waste bag stations and additional trash cans, the city hopes to encourage responsible pet ownership and cleaner neighborhoods.
How the Stations Will Be Installed
The first 20 stations will be distributed in two ways:
*10 stations will be placed alongside existing trash bins in parks and high-traffic areas.
*10 freestanding stations will introduce new trash receptacles in neighborhoods.
Community Involvement & Sponsorship Opportunities
Residents play a key role in determining station locations. A brief survey (accessible via QR code or link below) invites feedback on where stations should be placed and what additional pet resources the community needs.
Local businesses, organizations, and individuals can also sponsor a station for one year, whether in honor of a beloved pet, family member, community group, or as a business commitment to Hazel Park’s sustainability efforts.
