Oak Park Seeks Applicants for Newly Formed Juneteenth Commission
Oak Park, MI – Oak Park officials have created a Juneteenth Commission dedicated to honoring Juneteenth through celebration, education, and community unity. The City is inviting interested residents to apply to serve, with an application deadline of Oct. 15.
Councilmembers Shaun Whitehead and Stephanie Crawford shared a statement, saying “Over the past five-plus years, we’ve built incredible momentum and community support around Oak Park’s Juneteenth celebration. It has grown not only in size and excitement but in meaning — becoming a powerful reflection of who we are and what we value as a city. In response to that growth, the City is now formalizing this effort by establishing the Oak Park Juneteenth Commission. This new body reflects our deep commitment to honoring the rich history and enduring legacy of freedom and resilience. The commission will bring together passionate residents to help shape inclusive programming that uplifts our community and deepens our collective understanding of history.”
Juneteenth is celebrated annually on June 19 to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States.
The deadline is Wednesday, October 15
