Test Results Show Reading Proficiency Among Third and Fourth Graders Across Oakland County

Oakland County, MI- The State of Michigan released its Spring 2024-25 M-STEP results for grades 3-8 last week, showing shares of students in 3rd and 4th grades achieving reading proficiency.
The charts below track the share of 3rd and 4th graders scoring Proficient or higher on the MEAP English Language Arts test, given in the Spring of this year, across Oakland County public school districts.
Allow me to summarize the findings:
- The share of 3rd grade students scoring Proficient or better ranged from lows of 11.3 and 11.6 percent in Pontiac and Oak Park, respectively, to highs of 67.9 and 66.6 in Troy and Birmingham, respectively.
- The range was even larger for 4th grade students. The share of 4th grade students scoring Proficient or better ranged from lows of 11.1 and 12.7 percent in Oak Park and Pontiac, respectively, to highs of 75.4 and 70.6 in Birmingham and Bloomfield Hills, respectively.
- The five lowest districts on both measures were Pontiac, Oak Park, Hazel Park, Clarenceville, and Madison.
- The five highest districts on both measures were Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Novi, Troy, and Rochester.
This data helps not only to understand educational disparities across Oakland County, but serves as a starting point for discussions of how to improve literacy rates, and why such differences may exist.
