Oakland Thrive Restaurant Quest: Ghost Modern Mexican in Pontiac

Pontiac, MI – Ghost Modern Mexican opened in Pontiac – at the corner of South Blvd and Woodward – earlier this year, following in the footsteps of a Ghost Handcrafted Tacos and Cocktails in Shelby Twp.
It’s a great place for dining in, or for easy carryout. I’ve tried a few items.
First was the shredded chicken quesadilla with a side of black beans. With many of the dishes there is a choice of protein, inducing citrus pork, shredded beef, grilled steak, pulled pork, grilled shrimp, and ground beef, or a veggie option. The shredded chicken was juicy and flavorful and the quesadilla had the right balance of crispy tortilla, chicken and cheese.
Another meal was the original burrito made with ground beef. It also had Rice, beans, pickled onions, roasted tomato, chili cream, corn, onions, cilantro, cotija. Served with guacamole and pico. For this meal I picked jalapeno cornbread for the side, as well as a side of esquite, which is street corn with spices and cotija.
The birria pizzadilla is a creation of flour tortillas filled with shredded beef, mozzarella and onion, topped with cilantro, sour cream, and consommé. This is a large dish with 8 pieces that ended up being great re-heated in the oven for slices through the week.
The crispy flower is an appetizer of breaded cauliflower with a tamarind glaze and cilantro.
And of course, there are tacos! Once I had the cod tacos featuring beer-battered cod, cabbage slaw, pickled red onion, on corn tortillas. The batter was surprisingly sweet, but the pickled red onion provided the right balance. And the veggie taco was made with spiced sweet potato, onions, corn, black beans, cilantro, pickled onion and cotija in a corn tortilla.
Ghost Modern Mexican also has churros for dessert. The menu is full of creative Mexican-inspired dishes, including coconut shrimp tacos, enchiladas, fajitas, burrito bowls, nachos and more.
While Ghost Modern Mexican in Pontiac does not serve alcohol, they do have a menu of mock-tails including the frozen horachata, pineapple co-co crush, and the strawberry cucumber cooler.
