Aug 23 – 24 – Hazel Park Art Fair
Hazel Park, MI – The Hazel Park Art Fair returns Aug. 23-24 for another year of family fun and creativity. Located at Green Acres Park, this free event gives artists of all skill levels a chance to share their masterpieces with the Hazel Park community.
With over 90 artists participating across diverse disciplines, ranging from sculpture, painting and illustration to jewelry, textiles and more, there is truly something for everyone. The Hazel Park Arts Council takes pride in keeping fees low to support emerging and established artists, while fostering an inclusive, creative space that encourages a vibrant mix of styles and mediums.
“Our fair is all about uniting the community through creativity,” said Alissa Sullivan, President of the Hazel Park Arts Council. “We’re looking forward to welcoming attendees to experience the incredible artists and interactive moments that make this event so special.”
Illustrator John Jurries will return this year to show off a new collection of prints from his on-going project, “Monster of the Day,” where he’s been drawing and painting a new whimsical creature every single day for over ten years. With hundreds of original monsters created since last year’s fair, attendees can explore another year’s worth of Jurries’ creativity.
“This will be my fifth year vending at the Hazel Park Art Fair. I always look forward to it!” said Jurries. “Everyone’s always so nice and friendly, from the volunteers to the shoppers to the other amazing artists, it’s a really special and welcoming atmosphere that I’m always glad to be a part of! Plus, you get to pet a bunch of dogs all weekend, how can you not love that?”
The Clawson Clay Guild returns with the highly anticipated “Clazel Park Pottery Showdown,” a lively series of interactive competitions where attendees can put their skills to the test. From blindfolded wheel throwing to other creative clay challenges, participants will compete for local bragging rights and the coveted title of “Clazel Park Pottery Showdown Champion.”
Attendees can also look forward to breathtaking aerial performances, including aerial silks, lyra, fire performances, acrobatics, stilt walking and more. These talented performers are a Hazel Park Art Fair staple, and never cease to amaze attendees.
Kicking things off Saturday morning, early attendees can enjoy Body Party, a 60-minute yoga session with yoga instructor Hailey Zureich, at 11 a.m.. Accessible to all skill levels and body types, this inclusive session is the perfect way to energize your body and mind before diving into a full day of art and activities.
Another returning favorite is The Wishing Tree, a beloved interactive art installation that invites attendees to write their wishes on ribbons and tie them to the tree, creating a vibrant, ever-growing tapestry of hopes and dreams. As part of a traveling modern art exhibit featured at major Hazel Park events, the Wishing Tree offers a unique glimpse into the collective spirit of the community.
For refreshments, fairgoers can sample delicious bites from local food trucks, The Grilled Wrap Veg-N and Taco Hub. Che Cosa Coffee, owned by John Forlini, will serve fresh-roasted coffee alongside a variety of hot and cold beverages. And guests 21+ years of age will have the opportunity to visit the charity craft beer tent, which will feature beers from local breweries.
This year’s fair will take place at Green Acres Park from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24. All of the Arts Council’s proceeds from the Hazel Park Art Fair are reinvested into the community, including initiatives such as scholarships, artist roundtables, mural projects, events and public art installations.
About The Hazel Park Arts Council
The Hazel Park Arts Council was formed in 2010 by Councilman Andy LeCureaux and former Hazel Park Mayor Jeffrey Keeton. The goals behind creating an arts council were to help create walkable spaces and highlight art through art gardens, sculptures, and murals in the city. This vision has since morphed into providing events for artists to showcase their works, supporting the art in STEAM, helping residents find their inner artist, and continuing to invest in public art. The council is a 501(c)(3) non-profit focused on fostering the arts in the Friendly City, making it a haven for artists to practice and promote their work.
