Another Hit and Run in Pontiac Leaves Unidentified Man Critically Injured

Pontiac, MI – An unidentified pedestrian is in critical condition after he was struck by a truck in Pontiac Sunday night, and the driver fled the scene. It is the seventh hit-and-run crash in Pontiac so far in 2025 that caused a serious or fatal injury.
Two crashes – on Aug. 5 and on July 3 – resulted in fatalities and happened within blocks of each other on Baldwin Avenue. In each instance, the driver did not stop and fled the scene. “It’s hard to imagine the lack of humanity that lets people hit a person with a car and drive off,” Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said. “We are seeking the public’s help to hold these people responsible. Someone knows valuable information and just needs to do the right thing and share it with our detectives.”
Sunday’s crash happened about 10:30 p.m. at the intersection of Perry and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. A 911 caller reported that a man was lying in the street, motionless, bleeding, and barely responsive. The man’s identity is not known. He is described as Hispanic and estimated to be in his late teens or early 20s. Investigators determined that the suspect vehicle was northbound on Perry Street, and the pedestrian was crossing Perry Street westbound. The vehicle was described by witnesses as a white work truck. The pedestrian was taken to the hospital where he is in critical condition.
The Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction is investigating the incident and is asking for the public’s help identifying the vehicle involved. It is unknown if the pedestrian was crossing in the designated crosswalk area when he was struck.
They are also seeking help with the two fatal crashes. The fatal crashes each took place after 11 p.m., were within blocks of each other on Baldwin Avenue, and each driver was operating a Jeep. The Aug. 5 crash involved a pedestrian. The July 3 crash involved a man on a bicycle. In both instances, the driver failed to stop at the scene or render aid. They simply drove away.
Shortly before midnight on Aug. 5, 43-year-old Thomas Cummings of Pontiac was fatally injured on Baldwin Avenue near Grandie Street. He was in a non-crosswalk area when he was hit by an unknown southbound vehicle. Cummings was taken to the hospital where he died from his injuries. Evidence recovered from the scene indicates the suspect vehicle was a Jeep body style. Investigators have not positively identified the vehicle or the driver involved in the crash.
On July 3 shortly after 11 p.m., the unidentified driver of a black Jeep Grand Cherokee struck and killed 48-year-old bicyclist Frank Tyson on Baldwin Avenue at Rundell and fled the scene. A witness followed the Grand Cherokee onto a side street where the driver and a passenger got out of the damaged vehicle and fled in a different vehicle, a silver Chevrolet Malibu. Investigators recovered the Grand Cherokee but have not yet identified the driver.
