Man Accused of Shooting Royal Oak Apartment Maintenance Worker Faces Multiple Charges

Royal Oak, MI – On Thursday July 31, 2025, at approximately 12:00 p.m., Royal Oak Officers responded to the Devon Park Apartments, in the 3800 block of Crooks Road, after receiving multiple 911 calls about an altercation and gunfire in the parking lot. Officers arrived and quickly encountered the shooting suspect, who was a tenant from the apartment complex, near the scene.
The suspect complied with the police officer’s commands and was taken into custody without further incident.
A gunshot victim was then located approximately 100 feet away. Royal Oak Fire Department Paramedics attempted emergency medical care, but the victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Multiple witnesses reported the suspect was in a heated verbal altercation with another tenant when he suddenly ran to his car and retrieved a handgun. The other tenant ran away, and the suspect turned his attention towards the victim, who was in the vicinity of the altercation, but not directly involved.
The victim is identified as 65-year-old Southfield resident Gregory Hill. Mr. Hill was a maintenance worker at the apartment complex and was working at the time of the shooting. The suspect is identified as 32-year-old Nathaniel Joshua-Olson Rockwell.
He is charged with:
One (1) count of Homicide – Murder First Degree, a felony which carries a sentence up to life in prison without parole.
Three (3) counts of Felony Firearm, a 2-year felony.
Two (2) counts of Felonious Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, a 4-year felony.
Royal Oak Police Chief Michael Moore said in a statement, “This was a senseless act of horrific violence. We extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. Thankfully, due to the swift actions of our officers, the suspect was apprehended quickly before he could harm anyone else.”
