Data: Oakland County’s Asian Population on the Rise

Oakland County, MI – The Census Bureau has released detailed age and race/ethnicity estimates for states and counties for 2024.
Oakland County’s population growth led all other Michigan counties between 2023 and 2024, increasing by just over 15,000 residents. This increase was experienced by all race/ethnic groups – particularly the Asian and Latino populations.
The chart below shows population change between 2020 and 2024 for the five major race/ethic groups in the county (the Native American and Pacific Islander populations are around 3,000 and 300, respectively).
While the county’s white, non-Hispanic population continues to account for the vast majority of residents (70 percent, down from 71 in 2020), the Asian population continues to be the fastest growing, increasing their share of the population from 8.2 to 10.1 percent, and accounting for about two-thirds of the county’s total population growth between 2023 and 2024.
To demonstrate the point, I leave you with 2 population pyramids – one for the white, non- Hispanic population (the majority) and one for the Asian, non-Hispanic population. It is easy to see why the white population is decreasing – the pyramid is heavily weighted toward the high end of the age continuum – and the Asian population is the fastest growing – heavily weighted in the prime working and child bearing ages.
