Three Village Administrators in Franklin Resign

Franklin, MI – Franklin Village Administrator Meg Schubert has tendered her resignation to the village council effective July 11 after nine months on the job.
Assistant village administrator Susan Goldstrom and village clerk Dana Hughes have also resigned, effective July 11.
“I don’t believe it’s productive to dwell on the reasons for my departure,” said Schubert, “but I understand the community and council deserve a statement.”
“My decision is not driven by a new opportunity,” said Schubert. “I had genuinely hoped to continue supporting meaningful progress in Franklin. I am proud of what we achieved and I remain deeply grateful to this remarkable community, Village President Goldberg and select council members who supported me during my tenure.”
Schubert last September returned to Franklin after a brief stint as the village’s Economic Development Director in 2021 and 2022. She replaced outgoing Village Administrator Roger Fraser who retired after serving five years. Before returning to Franklin, Schubert served as assistant city manager in Troy, Michigan.
The village administrator is not elected, but appointed by the village council.
“We lost an amazing person,” said David Goldberg, president of the village council. “Meg walked into a boat load of challenges and never backed down. She overhauled our budget. She worked 100 hours a week to achieve a collective bargaining agreement with the police department and she streamlined $300,000 worth of budget items, addressing Franklin’s biggest problem which is revenues and expenses.”
“Meg served with professionalism, leadership and dedication,” said trustee Angelina Sulaka who is serving her first term. “It’s bittersweet to see her move on, as she was masterful at bringing ideas and people together. I am confident under President Goldberg’s leadership and our passionate council, we’ll illuminate not only the historical charm, but also the burgeoning potential of this unique Village.”
How will Franklin Village govern come July 12 after the heart of its administration departs?
“We’re going to turn this problem in an opportunity,” said Goldberg. “But first, we’ll search for and hire an interim administrator. Perhaps, we’ll restructure. We may redefine job descriptions. We may eliminate the assistant administrator position and add a full time treasurer as Bingham Farms has. We may hire temps. Plante Moran, our accountant, could see a bigger role in the interim. They’re expensive. But, we have a more than capable board of trustees who can rise to this occasion.”
In the meantime Police Chief Curt Lawson will assume acting village administrator duties and Stephanie Longworth will assist Chief Lawson, while Heather Mylodski will fill in at interim Village Clerk.
“Meg was the best administrator we have had in the village in the time that I’ve lived in Franklin,” said longtime trustee Michael Seltzer. “Council needs to work diligently and cohesively to find a replacement and to move forward in the best interests of our Franklin community. I am sorry to see her leave.”
