Oakland Thrive Restaurant Quest: Zaytoona Mediterranean Grill in Hazel Park

Hazel Park, MI – The name “Zaytoona” means olive in Arabic. It’s also the name of the recently opened Zaytoona Mediterranean Grill in Hazel Park.
The restaurant, which features authentic Middle Eastern cuisine for carryout with a few booths for seating, is the second location. The first location is in Dearborn.
Zaytoona offers a menu of healthy, fresh-made dishes like falafel, shawarma, grape leaves, fried kibbee, and kofta. In my quest to try every restaurant in Oakland County, I ordered the chicken shawarma plate with grilled veggies and rice, plus a side of hommous.
The generous portions made for plenty of leftovers of the juicy, mildly-seasoned chicken and the nice big chunks of fresh grilled vegetables. I also ordered some amazing baklava, which is a traditional dessert made of phyllo dough layered with finely chopped nuts and sweet, sticky honey.
Zaytoona also offers fresh fruit smoothies, so I ordered the blueberry one. There are also strawberry and mango options available.
Those who want an easy, on-the-go meal might opt for sandwiches and wraps, including the beef kebab sandwich, Chipotle wrap, and even cheeseburgers for those who might be in the mood. There’s also a selection of salads for those aiming even healthier, including the Greek salad, house, salad and the fattoush which is made with crisp veggies like tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, and onions with mint and parsley and a tangy dressing to tie it all together.
