Dragon Forest Lets Detroit Zoo Visitors Experience Mythical Adventure
(Lilly Crossley, June 13, 2025)
Royal Oak, MI – This summer, visitors at the Detroit Zoo can enjoy a new immersive experience. The Dragon Forest is a three-acre trail with more than 30 sculptures and animatronics of dragons, wyverns, and other magical creatures.
The animatronics appear very lifelike, for their size, coloring, and skin designs stay true to what they would look like if they were real. They also have special effects, such as sounds and moving parts, to make them feel even more realistic.
Along with the animatronics, there are also solid sculptures that children are allowed to touch and take pictures with.
Each animatronic and sculpture comes with an educational sign that tells visitors about the creature, as well as its connection to the wildlife in real life. There is also a fun connection to the animals that currently live in the Detroit Zoo.
Visitors can participate in the Dragon Forest Quest, which reveals what type of adventurer you are. Signs are placed throughout the trail, asking questions and giving three different answers to choose from. Based on your choices, the end of the trail shows a final sign that describes your adventurer type.
At the end of the trail, guests can walk through a gift shop, which has plenty of dragon-themed souvenirs and toys for anyone to enjoy and remember their wonderful experience at the Dragon Forest.
This is the first time that these types of creatures have visited the Detroit Zoo, making this experience much more exciting and memorable.
The Dragon Forest is located between the Rackham Fountain and Coney Island at the zoo, in the same spot that the animatronic dinosaurs used to be when they would visit in past summers.
Tickets are available for purchase at the zoo entrance, as well as right before entering the forest. They are an additional $6 from the regular zoo admission. Detroit Zoo members can purchase an add-on unlimited access ticket that ranges from $35 to $60.
The Dragon Forest is available now until September 7th, from 9:30am to 5pm every day.
