Ferndale Police Rescue Puppy, Arrest Suspect for Animal Torture
(Ferndale Police, June 9, 2025)
Ferndale, MI – On Friday, June 6th, 2025, at approximately 12:10 AM., Ferndale Police Officers responded to a 911 call regarding an animal crying near Woodward & E. Bennett Street. The caller stated they had also observed an unknown male put a small animal inside a garbage bag.
Officers located the male, later identified as Curtis Christophr-Ray Martin, a 25-year-old Detroit resident, crouched alongside his vehicle with the hatchback open. After an investigation, officers located a three-month-old puppy lying in the trunk with a garbage bag over its head. Both of the dog’s ears had been severed, and its tail had been tied off in preparation for removal. Officers also located scissors and surgical supplies inside the vehicle, along with a substantial amount of blood.
As officers attempted to arrest Martin, he resisted, and a brief foot pursuit ensued. Martin was taken into custody without further incident.
Officers transported the dog to a local animal hospital, where it was treated for its wounds. The dog is in stable condition and will be turned over to the Oakland County Animal Control to continue treatment until it is healthy enough to be adopted.
On June 6th, 2025, Martin was arraigned by 43rd District Court Magistrate Brennan on the following
charges:

Martin was given a $100,000 cash bond and is scheduled to appear on June 16th, 2025, at 1 PM.
“We are thankful for the vigilance of the 911 caller and the swift action of our patrol officers in rescuing this puppy,” said Ferndale Police Deputy Chief David Spellman. “This is a disturbing act of cruelty. We will all sleep better knowing the person responsible is in custody.”
