June 7 – Ferndale Library Summer Kickoff Party
Ferndale, MI – The best place to start your summer is your local library, and the best way to properly kick off the sunny season is with a fun reading challenge that could win you a prize! On Saturday, June 7, the Ferndale Area District Library hosts an all-ages Kickoff Party for its annual series of Summer Reading Programs, embracing the art-centric theme of “Color Our World,” in which participants are encouraged to tap into their creative sides as they attend crafty events on the library’s schedule and complete fun library-centric activities with a nifty little app called Beanstack!
Everyone who participates in Ferndale’s Summer Reading Challenge has the chance to win a variety of prizes! The impetus behind Ferndale’s seasonal reading challenge was initially intended to help keep kids on track as far as further developing their literacy skills between the academic school year, but it has, for a long time, been open to participants of all ages–we’re looking at YOU, grown-ups. That’s right; it’s time to take a break from so many streaming shows and binge-read this summer!
Anyone can stop by the Ferndale Library on Saturday, June 7, between 12:00 pm and 4:00 pm, to sign up for the Challenge and receive a full schedule of their events. If you don’t have your library card yet, that’s okay. Ferndale residents can sign up on June 7 at the Circulation Desk within minutes when they present their Driver’s License or State ID displaying their residency; any non-Ferndale residents can still sign up for and participate in the challenge, too! During the Kickoff Party, special activities will be hosted indoors and outdoors, including jumbo lawn games provided by Oakland County Parks’ RAPP Program. There will be crafts, temporary tattoos and face-painting for kids indoors, while we’ll have a fun rock-painting activity outdoors for our adult patrons!
Staff can help library visitors sign up for the Reading Challenge by downloading and creating an account with the Beanstack App! Beanstack can effectively motivate participants to read and have fun at the library all summer long by logging their activity and reading progress! Of course, paper logs are also available for anyone who prefers analog-style. There are reading challenges designed for four age groups, each with unique requirements for completion, including Early Readers, Kids, Teens, and Adults!
Did we mention there’s a chance to win prizes? Did we mention that the Friends of the Ferndale Library are sponsoring the Treat Dreams Dream Machine truck, parking right next to the library’s courtyard? Did we mention that Treat Dreams will offer a special library-themed ice cream!? Best of all, several library programs this season will allow attendees to tap into their artistic sides to “color our world”!
