Oakland County Cities and Townships See Population Gains According to Census Update
(Kurt Metzger, May 15, 2025)
Oakland County, MI – The Census Bureau produces annual population estimates for the nation, states, counties, and communities – cities, townships, and villages.
State population estimates are released at the end of the calendar year (2024 estimate was released in December 2024). County estimates follow in March, and subcounty estimates are released in May.
While the methodologies differ among the three, in the end, the sum of all counties must equal the state total, and the sum of all communities within a county must add to the county total.
Michigan gained 57,103 residents between 2023 and 2024, bringing its total population to 10,140,459.
Oakland County was the biggest winner among the counties, and its year-to-year gain of 15,052 was its largest since the before 1990.
Today the Census Bureau released its 2024 population estimates for all cities, villages, and townships. Among the 1,535 cities and townships (villages are subdivisions of townships), 900 gained population, 539 lost, and 96 had no change.
The top gainers in the state were Detroit (up 6,791 to 645,705), Grand Rapids, Pittsfield township, Troy, Macomb township, Lansing, and Clinton township.
Oakland County’s gain was distributed across ALL 51 cities and townships. As stated above, Troy was the winner in the county, gaining 1,268 residents. It was followed by Farmington Hills, Lyon township, Southfield, and Waterford township. The attached chart shows population growth for the 51 communities.
