Holly Officers Show Love to Man Who Lost Dog in Crash
(Holly Fire Dept, May 13, 2025)
Holly, MI – On April 19, at 10:20 pm, Holly officers were dispatched to a report of a man in a wheelchair hit by a vehicle on Grange Hall Rd. in front of an apartment building.
On arrival, officers found the man sitting in his wheelchair in the apartment driveway near the road, deeply sobbing. He reported was not hit, or injured, but his only companion in life Odin was killed. Officers located a large black dog in the roadway that was killed by impact with an unknown vehicle that had fled the scene. The man was identified as Ron, who stated he and Odin were outside on the sidewalk when Odin entered the road and was struck.
Ron lived alone with his best friend Odin, who he rescued from the Humane Society thirteen years ago. Since then, they have been inseparable.
Ron has suffered several difficult health challenges that have confined him to a wheelchair and has severely limited his mobility. Odin was his constant companion.
Officers recovered Odin from the roadway and requested help from Holly Fire Department personnel, who responded to the scene to take Odin to a safe place. Officers asked Ron who they could call to assist him at this moment. He replied he had no one to call.
Officers assisted Ron back to his apartment. After witnessing Ron’s loss, officers were determined to bring Odin home to Ron in a memorable and dignified way. An officer contacted staff at Pawsitive Care Veterinary Clinic. After explaining the difficult circumstances and the lack of financial ability to pay for a proper disposition for Odin, Pawsitive Care staff said they would cover half the cost of cremation.
Holly PD Officers and staff pitched in to pay for the remaining costs of the cremation and went beyond to purchase an Urn and a ceramic paw print.
Recently, Officers responded to visit Ron, and to bring Odin home. Ron was surprised and thankful to all who helped him and Odin.
We thank the staff at Pawsitive Care and the Holly PD crew for their kindness to ensure Ron and Odin stay together. In addition, officers are working with Ron and his Doctor to secure a Life Alert necklace emergency notification system to provide him fast emergency help when out of his home.
