City Leaders Join Auburn Elementary in Honoring Arbor Day
(City of Auburn Hills, April 30, 2025)
Auburn Hills, MI – Auburn Hills recently celebrated Arbor Day with a special event hosted at Auburn Elementary School. Principal Byas welcomed city officials to Auburn Elementary School on Friday, April 25 to join the Auburn Elementary Green Team.
The school’s Green Team, led by Mrs. Sakalian, demonstrated their commitment to environmental stewardship, helping make Auburn Hills a greener place to live and learn. Mayor Pro Tem Eugene Hawkins delivered the official Arbor Day proclamation, City Councilman Henry Knight assisted with the tree planting, and Nature Programmer Ally Maye-Bloom engaged students with fascinating tree facts. The city’s forestry team also participated, including City Arborist Lance Vanmeeteren and Forestry Technician Jesse Beaton.
The celebration featured the planting of an Autumn Blaze maple tree, selected for its stunning red fall foliage and adaptability to urban environments. This living addition to the campus will serve as a reminder of the partnership between the city and school while also offering students a direct way to improve their environment.

This event exemplifies how school environmental programs can extend beyond the classroom and help build meaningful community connections. Auburn Elementary’s Arbor Day celebration brought together students, educators, and city officials to foster both environmental awareness and civic engagement among young citizens. The Auburn Elementary Green Team is setting a great example with their environmental initiatives, proving that even our youngest community members can make a significant impact on creating a more sustainable future for Auburn Hills.
