Data Shows Ratio of Men to Women at Each Age
(Kurt Metzger, April 21, 2025)
The US Census Bureau has released its 2024 U.S. population estimate by single years of age and gender. This allows for the analysis of gender differences by age. Allow me to give you my highlights:
• Males outnumber females at birth. The ratio between birth and one year of age is 104.4 boys to 100 girls.
• Males reach their highest ratio – 105.3 – at the age of 13.
• Males outnumber females through the age of 46, when the ratio is 100.1. By the age of 47, the ratio falls below 100 as women take the lead that they will hold for the rest of the lifecycle.
• The ratio at the retirement age of 65 stands at 92.8 males per 100 females.
• By 75 years of age, the ratio stands at 84.0.
• The ratio drops below the 70 mark at age 85 – 69.6 to be exact.
• By 90 years of age the ratio drops below 60, and then plummets to 32.7 by the age of 100.
