City of Farmington Getting Two Fitness Courts Thanks to Oakland County Parks Grant
(Oakland County Parks, March 11, 2025)
Farmington, MI – Oakland County Parks (OCP) is partnering with the City of Farmington to fund new fitness courts at two community parks: Shiawassee Park and Flanders Park. At Shiawassee Park, the new fitness court will enhance existing park amenities and provide facilities that can be used by both visitors and fitness business owners in downtown Farmington. Flanders Park, located in the southernmost part of Farmington, serves a dense residential area where the new fitness court will provide workout opportunities for adults to accompany the existing children’s play equipment at the park. OCP is contributing $200,000 to support the project, with the City providing $272,500 in matching funds, including $100,000 from the National Fitness Campaign.
“This is another great example of public-private partnership to achieve shared goals in the city,” Farmington Mayor Joe LaRussa said. “Providing opportunities for outdoor fitness complements the recreation and play assets we have in our parks and gives families even more reason to visit and enjoy our outdoor spaces. The National Fitness Campaign, Oakland County Parks, and the City of Farmington have a shared vision for making attractive, inviting and effective outdoor fitness resources available to the public, and I’m so grateful to see that shared vision become a reality in our community.”
“Spending time enjoying outdoor recreational activities and connecting with nature can have an incredibly positive impact on our physical and mental health,” Parks Director Chris Ward said. “Oakland County Parks is proud to partner with the City of Farmington and the National Fitness Campaign to develop these fitness courts at two wonderful city park locations. We appreciate Mayor LaRussa’s leadership in initiating this great project and Priority Health for the funding support they are providing.”
“I am grateful to Oakland County Parks and all the partners providing funding to install two state-of-the-art fitness courts in Farmington,” County Commissioner William Miller said. “This is an investment in the health and well-being of our community and residents and will provide new opportunities for everyone to stay active and thrive.”
This partnership with the City of Farmington is part of OCP’s ongoing commitment to find innovative ways to collaborate with local municipalities to provide improved parks and recreation experiences and services to Oakland County residents. Additional funding was provided by The National Fitness Campaign, which has partnered with Priority Health to support outdoor wellness infrastructure initiatives across Michigan.
