OC Restaurant Quest: Old Detroit Burger Bar
(Crystal A. Proxmire, orig. Jan. 24, 2022)
Lake Orion, Troy, Clawson, Lapeer, Clarkston, MI – The burgers at Old Detroit Burger Bar are of course the main attraction, but for a recent lunchtime meeting I decided to be a rebel and order the fish and chips instead. (Don’t worry though, I did go back for a burger a few days later to make this a thorough review, and you can read about that shortly.)
There are several Old Detroit Burger Bar locations, and the menus have some variations. These visits were to the one on Lapeer Road in Orion Township.
The fish and chips were great – with nice hearty portions and perfectly crisp rich beer batter, and yummy housemade cole slaw on the side – served with a choice of soup or salad. Rootbeer in a bottle is a nice touch. Plus they use the wax paper that looks like it’s old fashioned newspaper, which I personally think makes any Reporter Food meal even better.

The person I was with ordered a salad, which looked splendid as well. The Michigan Cherry Salad is made with fresh lettuce, dried cherries, bleu cheese, walnuts, tomatoes, cucumbers, and apples served with raspberry vinaigrette (though the one below was ordered sans tomatoes, with chicken added).
Since I didn’t have a burger for this visit, I got one later to include it.
I know, it’s a tough job.
But for the sake of journalism I got a Dragon Burger topped with bacon, cheddar, chili, a fried egg, lettuce, tomato, onion and pickle. I got this beast of a burger with an upgrade to chili cheese fries. The buns come branded with the Old English D.
Check out other burger choices like The Hart Plaza Burger, The Ambassador Burger, The Gratiot Ave, The Woodward Ave, The Jefferson Ave, and more along the same theme. Browse their website if you want the details on those.

And also check out non-burger meals like the Monroe Street Gyro, the Eastern Market Reuben, the Clark Street Nacho, or the Cobo Cobb Salad.
