Troy Library Hires Architect to Envision New Building
(TPL, Feb. 5, 2025)
Troy, MI – Troy Public Library is taking the next steps in envisioning a future library with the hire of HBM Architects LLC to create a schematic design and opinion of costs.
The Troy City Council unanimously voted to award the schematic design and opinion of cost contract to HBM Architects at their January 26 meeting.
HBM Architects from Cleveland, Ohio exclusively designs libraries, historic, and academic buildings. HBM has over 100 library projects in their portfolio.
“HBM stood out for us as a firm that specializes in libraries, as they will have a deep understanding and appreciation for what a public library needs to serve today’s users,” said Library Director Emily Dumas. “Their large portfolio of library projects demonstrates the beauty and functionality of their designs. I was so impressed with how unique each design is, demonstrating how HBM designs around the community and surrounding environment they’re working in.”
Troy Public Library’s 2024-28 strategic plan determined the need for a new building to accommodate library users and the growing Troy population.
“As evidenced by national averages for square footage of public libraries, Troy Public Library is about half of where it should be per capita,” said Dumas. “The library also hasn’t had a major renovation or expansion since 1984, and is thus functionally obsolete as a modern day library. This lack of modernization, coupled with our continued investment in repairs rather than long-term capital needs, presents a very real challenge in providing certain features that the Troy community deserves.”
Renderings are expected to be completed by spring of 2025. Once complete, the renderings will be presented to the Troy City Council and made available for public viewing.
Troy Public Library is located at 510 W. Big Beaver Rd., just northeast of City Hall. Visit troypl.org for more information or call (248) 524-3538.
