Stephanie Crawford Appointed to Oak Park City Council
(City of Oak Park, Jan. 31, 2025)
Oak Park, MI- The Oak Park City Council unanimously voted to appoint Stephanie Crawford to fill the current council vacancy created by the resignation of longtime council member Carolyn Burns. Crawford received her formal swearing in today with City Clerk Ed Norris and will receive her ceremonial Oath of Office at the regular City Council Meeting on Monday, Feb. 3, 2025.
Crawford has been an Oak Park resident for the last decade, a member of the Arts and Cultural Diversity Commission for eight years, served as Chairperson on the Juneteenth planning sub-committee, as Youth Coordinator for the neighboring Good Shepherd Church, and brings a variety of experience as a professional, resident and engaged community member to her post. Additionally, she holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications from Eureka College.
“We are thrilled to welcome Stephanie Crawford to the Oak Park City Council,” said City of Oak Park Mayor Marian McClellan. “She shares a passion for community service and diversity that directly align with our city values. Additionally, her familiarity with relevant statues, contract review and the opportunities facing Oak Park, make her an informed and energetic addition to this Council.”
Crawford was one of 22 candidates who submitted a resident interest application, and one of five finalists interviewed live via Special City Council Meeting on Jan. 29, 2025. Council deliberations took place directly following the candidate interviews and although Council Members expressed gratitude for the depth of qualified applicants and interviewees, they found a strong consensus for Crawford as their appointment choice.
The Oak Park City Charter dictates that any council vacancy must be filled within 30 days and allows for direct appointments by the remaining council members. The City Council opted for a public interest application process to inform the appointment process and foster meaningful civic engagement. Crawford’s appointment was made well within the allotted time period.
