Dec 9-13 – Moonbeams for Sweet Dreams Shares Light with Kids in Pediatric Care

Royal Oak, MI – Corewell Health Children’s is once again lighting the night for its littlest patients with the beloved holiday tradition“Moonbeams for Sweet Dreams” Dec. 9-23 at Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital, located at 3601 W. 13 Mile Road in Royal Oak.
At 8 p.m. sharp, for 10 minutes each night, friends and neighbors of all ages will use flashlights to beam light up to the windows of the pediatric unit. Pediatric patients inside the hospital return the glow with flashlights of their own.
The event was created to lift the hearts of children and families who might feel isolated or have difficulty settling in for a good night’s sleep during the winter holidays.
“We are proud to offer this dynamic experience to our patients and families for the 6th straight year,” said Moonbeams co-leader, Lisa Muma, RN. “Our history, which bookends the pandemic, is a testament to the big-heartedness and resilience of our community. Community support has warmed our spirits during good times and difficult ones, too.”
Sensory-friendly night
Families who have loved ones with special needs are invited to participate in a sensory-friendly version of our traditional Moonbeams event on Dec. 8.
“Moonbeams isn’t just about flashing lights and booming sounds. It’s about creating connection,” said Kathleen Grobbel, Moonbeams co-leader and manager of the Child Life program at Corewell Health Children’s. “If we can make small changes to accommodate members of our community who might not otherwise be able to participate, as caregivers, it just makes sense for us to do so. This part of our community has so much to offer.”
During the low-sensory, pre-event on Dec. 8, a support table with stress balls, fidget toys, ear plugs and colored paper to cover flashlights will be available. If you or someone you know is interested in participating in this Dec. 8 event, please email lisa.muma@

Other important details to share
Attendees are asked to arrive by 7:45 p.m. to leave plenty of time for parking. Carpooling is recommended. Participants should gather on the sidewalk near the Medical Office Building located across from the East entrance; wayfinding signs will be posted around campus.
Buses and groups of 10 or more are asked to register here.
Parking is available in the small parking lot across from the North parking deck and just east of the Medical Office Building campus.
From the 13 Mile Road entrance, follow the blue signs toward the North parking deck and park in the lot across from the parking deck entrance. Additional parking is also available near the Coolidge Highway entrance and at the Neuroscience Center.
Reminders:
- Do not bring drones or laser pointers.
- Only use restrooms located in the Medical Office Building. Do not enter the main hospital.
- Do not attend when experiencing symptoms of cold, flu or COVID-19.
Moonbeams for Sweet Dreams launched in 2017 at the suggestion of the Beaumont Children’s Pediatric Family Advisory Council. The Corewell Health Children’s Child Life program is funded by the community through Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.
