OC Restaurant Quest: Lockhart’s BBQ in Royal Oak

Royal Oak, MI – A meaty good meal was had thanks to a recent visit to Lockhart’s BBQ in Downtown Royal Oak. With recipes inspired by a tour of the nation’s best BBQ spots – including Lockart, Texas – Lockhart’s brings a mix of flavors, styles, and high quality meats to the table. Or in this case, to the to go bag.
I was delighted to try the 3 meat combo, selecting the 1/4 chicken dark meat, pulled pork, and brisket with baked beans and mac-n-cheese for the sides, and the signature sauce. All the meats are smoked and seasoned, with sauce on the side, giving the flavors of the rubs and marinades a chance to really work on the slow-cooked meat.
The beans were the perfect mix of rich sweet sauce and hearty beans, and the mac was super cheesy.
My favorite of the meats was the brisket, with perfectly crisp fatty edges and thick melt-in-your-mouth slices.
Other meat options include smoked sausage and ribs. Lockart’s also has other meal options, including the fried catfish platter, house smoked salmon, shrimp and rice, Texas chili, smoked wings, burnt ends, and burgers.
There are four sauce choices available. The signature has molasses, vinegar, and pepper. The sweet is a tomato-based sauce with root beer and grape flavors. Fire on the Red is “cranked up” with cayenne, chipotle, and habanero. And the NC Vinegar is a blend of peppers, lemon, and vinegar.
For dessert I had the peach cobbler, though it was a tough choice between that and the banana pudding. Lockahrt’s also has a selection of specialty cocktails, brunch on the weekends, catering, and family meals to go.
