Antisemitic Fliers in Baggies Tossed in Driveways
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Oct. 5, 2024)
Oakland County, MI – Fliers with antisemitic messages were found tossed in people’s driveways across several Oakland County communities Saturday, with the fliers inside baggies with pellets, presumably to make them easier to throw.
In West Bloomfield, Deputy Police Chief Dale Young said in a press release that “The initial investigation revealed that over 100 households in the neighborhood received similar material on their driveways overnight.”
A black pickup truck was seen in the area just before midnight. It is unclear if the vehicle is involved. Young is asking those with information, or recordings of suspicious behavior from Friday night to Saturday morning, that they report it to police. “The West Bloomfield Police Department strongly condemns hate of any kind and is actively investigating this situation as a case of ethnic intimidation.”
The Farmington Hills Police Department is also asking for the public help identifying the culprit(s).
“The timing of this detestable activity exacerbates the chilling effect on our community,” said Farmington Hills Police Chief Jeff King. “This type of hateful activity will not be tolerated in Farmington Hills and our agency will use all available resources to prevent, investigate, and prosecute those responsible for this incident.”
The Farmington Hills Police Department investigators and officers eventually recovered over 100 bags containing the antisemitic materials. The bags were found to be weighed down with various non-hazardous materials for ease in hurling on to the residential lawns and driveways.
Chief King noted that a team of Farmington Hills Detectives and Command Officers were immediately recalled supporting the investigation, which included a door-to-door canvass, evidence collection, and witness interviews. Chief King added that this is a very active investigation, with investigators coordinating with our State and Federal Law Enforcement partners, the Anti-Defamation League, and other jurisdictions who experienced matching incidents.
Anyone who has any information related to this incident, is asked to contact the Farmington Hills Police Department Command Desk at 248-871-2610.
Residents in other nearby cities shared about having found fliers in bags on their driveways as well. The incidents are similar to others around the country over the past year.
