Explore: The Solar System Trail at Addison Oaks
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Sept. 14, 2024)
Leonard, MI – Early this summer Addison Oaks added an interactive feature to one of their most popular walking paths. Dubbed The Solar System Trail, this 2.5 mile trek takes visitors around Buhl Lake and introduces them to the planets of our solar system.
Adjacent to the main parking lot, not far from the main playscape, the trail starts out with a sculpture collection to demonstrate the sizes of the planets in proportion to each other, with a big rusty circle representing the sun.
From there hikers can make a loop representing the distance of each planet, with stations along the way where they can stop and learn more about each. There are signs and models for each planet, plus QR codes that link to NASA’s website for those who want to learn even more.
In a press release earlier this year, Addison Oaks Park Supervisor Kate Pardy said “We are looking forward to seeing everyone enjoy the trail. The information is presented in a fun way and is designed to engage guests of all ages as they enjoy being together outdoors.”
Visitors can also enjoy scenic views and interaction with nature as they stroll from one planet to the next. On my recent hike I enjoyed not only the displays, but also seeing a snake, a crawfish, and an abundance of birds, frogs, and fish along the scenic route.
The trail showcases Buhl Lake, Adams Lake, and Buhl estate, a historic Tudor-style home that serves as a wedding and banquet venue.
The trail is accessible up to the planet Saturn for individuals with wheelchairs or mobility challenges. The remaining 1.9 miles of the trail, which includes Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, is not accessible grade.
It takes approximately 45-60 minutes to walk the entire trail at a leisurely pace.
Modern restrooms and rustic facilities are available along the trail. The park itself boasts over 20 miles of trails, an 18 hole disc golf course, picnic areas, and facilities to rent boats, kayaks, and bicycles. There is a campground for those who want to enjoy nature overnight, as well as events for those who want to come out and see the stars. It’s a popular spot for the Oakland Astronomy Club as well.
