Brandon Mayfield Charged with Felonies After Standoff in Farmington Hills

Farmington Hills, MI – A 41-year-old man has been arrested and charged with multiple felonies following an hours-long barricaded incident late last week.

On Aug. 15, 2024, just after 6:45 a.m., the Farmington Hills Police responded to a report of a felonious assault in the 31000 block of Nine Mile Road at a four-unit apartment building.

Upon arrival, officers spoke with a 28-year-old victim who explained that his ride share driver had used the driveway of a neighboring house. The occupant of that house, later identified as 41-year-old Brandon Mayfield, followed them across the street. When the victim exited the car, he was confronted by Mayfield, who was brandishing a knife and using racial slurs. The victim fled to his apartment and called 911. While on the phone with dispatchers, the victim reported hearing a loud pop, which he believed to be a gunshot from Mayfield’s direction. Mayfield had returned to his residence and was outside yelling racial slurs.

Officers quickly arrived at the location, established a perimeter and attempted to contact Mayfield. As officers approached Mayfield’s residence to speak with him, they observed him standing in the driveway armed with a sword. Despite verbal commands to drop the sword, Mayfield refused to comply and retreated into his apartment. The officers maintained the perimeter and requested assistance from the Oakland County Sheriff’s SWAT team.

SWAT team members arrived and ordered Mayfield to exit the building, but he continued to refuse. When all attempts to communicate with Mayfield failed, SWAT utilized additional tactics and deployed a chemical agent. The chemical agent had an immediate effect, causing Mayfield to surrender peacefully. Farmington Hills detectives obtained a search warrant for the residence and upon execution of the warrant found numerous knives, swords, a rifle, and a spent shell casing, which were recovered from the apartment.

On Aug. 16, 2024, the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office authorized a three-count warrant charging Mayfield with:

Brandon Ryan Mayfield was arraigned by Magistrate Berke of the 47th District Court on Aug. 17, 2024, and given a $100,000 bond, requiring 10% for release.

“Violent crime in any form is never acceptable, but this incident was further aggravated by racially influenced speech,” said Farmington Hills Police Chief Jeff King. “The Farmington Hills Police will not tolerate these crimes in the community and will use every resource to bring offenders to justice to ensure the community remains safe for all people.”

Chief King wishes to commend the Farmington Hills Police Officers and members of the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team, for their actions in resolving this situation peacefully and professionally.
