Berkley School Board Seeking Applicants to Fill Vacancy

Berkley, MI – The Berkley School District is seeking applicants for an open seat on the Board of Education. The position became vacant with the resignation of Trustee Ron Justice, effective September 4, 2024. Mr. Justice served as a Board member for the last 13 years and is moving outside of the Berkley School District boundaries in September.
Roger Blake, Berkley Board of Education President, stated, “Mr. Justice was elected to the Board in 2011. We are grateful for his 13 years of service to the Berkley School District. While we will miss him, we have a responsibility to fill the vacant Board position within 30 days.”
The new Board trustee will finish Mr. Justice’s term through December 31, 2024. Mr. Justice did not plan to run for another term and registered candidates for his open seat will be on the November 2024 ballot to serve a six year term.
Applications for the position are being accepted until Thursday, September 5 at 5 pm. Interviews for the candidates will be held on Thursday, September 26 at 7 pm, and the new trustee will be appointed and sworn in that same evening. The appointed member will begin their term immediately.
Applicants for the Board position must be residents of the Berkley School District which includes Berkley, Huntington Woods, and the northern portion of Oak Park. The School District boundaries can be found on the District website. A list of Board member responsibilities and minimum expectations is posted on the Board of Education webpage.
Interested candidates should fill out and submit an application form, including letter of interest, available on the District website. In addition to completing the application form, interested candidates should forward their resume to Lori Suarez at lori.suarez@berkleyschools.org
Applications and resumes must be received by 5 pm on Thursday, September 5.
