Holly Oaks ORV Park Hosting Free ORV Weekend Aug 17-18
(Oakland County Parks, Aug. 13, 2024)
Groveland Township, MI- Holly Oaks ORV Park will participate in the Free ORV Weekend hosted by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) Aug. 17-18. During these two days, Michigan residents and visitors legally can ride DNR-designated routes and trails without purchasing an ORV license or trail permit. In addition, the entrance fee for Holly Oaks ORV Park has been waived by the Oakland County Parks and Recreation Commission.
“We are excited to participate in this event and invite everyone to come out and experience the unique aspects of Holly Oaks,” Jamie Weasel, park supervisor for Holly Oaks ORV Park and Groveland Oaks County Park, said. “We have many different types of features designed to challenge drivers and provide thrills for people of all ages. The best part is that since the park is built on former and active sand and gravel mines, the terrain constantly changes making no two visits ever the same.”
Visitors will need to bring their own vehicles as rentals are not available on site. All types of ORVs are welcome, including full-size vehicles, side-by-sides, all-terrain vehicles or ATVs and motorcycles.
“Off-roading is a fantastic activity for families and thrill-seekers alike,” he added. “It gets everyone outdoors together having fun, but there are also other benefits, like developing a sense of teamwork, challenging the limits of one’s skills and being able to share a passion for adventure and vehicles with others who share this enthusiasm.”
During the Free ORV Weekend, all ORV rules and laws still apply. This includes that all vehicles entering the park must have a 10’ orange flag securely mounted and all ORV riders and drivers must also sign a waiver form before entry.
Holly Oaks ORV Park will open from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. during free ORV Weekend. Current hours are 2-8 p.m. Fridays and 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. On Labor Day, Sept. 2, hours are 4-8 p.m.
Detroit 4Fest, a very popular event that features off-roading fun, Ultra4 USA racing, food trucks and more, will be held at the park Sept. 6-8. The SAE BAJA Competition is set for Sept. 13-15 and MOXC ATV Race for Oct. 12. These types of events add to festive family atmosphere that is prevalent in the off-roading community, said Weasel.
Features at Holly Oaks include 4 x 4 trails, single track trails, steep hills, a water crossing, rock crawls and more. There’s also a 9,000-squarefoot concrete peak, called Mt. Magna, designed to replicate the experience of popular, massive rock formations in Moab, Utah.
In addition, Holly Oaks ORV Park features the “North 60,” a scramble area that allows riders to make their own paths. It is crisscrossed with old mining roads and features extreme terrain that ranges from mud flats to 40’ vertical cliffs. A youth riding area with dedicated space for young motorcycle and all-terrain vehicle riders of all abilities allows for exploration of off-road driving as more novice riders build their comfort level in the park.
